Scott Hamilton & Rossano Sportiello: Midnight at Nola’s Penthouse

Scott Hamilton and Rossano Sportiello play with good humour and easy familiarity, writes Dave Gelly

Hamilton is the finest living tenor saxophonist in the modern swing idiom, and this set of 10 low-pressure duets brings out all his best qualities – fluency, warmth of tone and elegance of phrase. Sportiello, who seems to be in ever-growing demand since moving to New York from his native Italy a few years back, has virtually every classic style of jazz piano at his fingertips. The easy familiarity and good humour with which they play together are a joy and an inspiration. The programme consists of ballads and jazz standards, some delightfully out-of-the-way.
