The Human League: Credo — review

Oakey and co update the beats… and retain the magic, writes Molloy Woodcraft

Thirty years since their heyday, 10 since their last studio release, and the Human League have a new record out. In truth, it's only really Philip Oakey and the two backing singers, but they sound very much like they always did, Oakey's distinctive, strident baritone intoning over vintage synths and stark harmonies. It's a post-house, post-electro revival world, so the beats have been updated courtesy of producers (and fellow Sheffield residents) I Monster, but the doomy wordscapes and wayward modulations remain all Oakey's own (and just the right side of self-parody). "Night People" and "Into the Night" stand out, and closing track "When the Stars Start to Shine" is eccentrically pleasing.
